It is even more important for Vancouver residents to have choice on energy – to allow them to choose between electricity or renewable natural gas/natural gas to heat their homes and cook their food or run their businesses.

  1. If the consumer carbon tax is removed, as promised by the federal Conservative Party, both the BC New Democratic Party and BC Conservative Party will also remove the carbon tax on natural gas – resulting in an approximately 25% cut in natural gas prices.
  2. BC imported $500 million in electricity in 2023 from the United States and Alberta – much of it not from renewable energy sources – and 2024 has the lowest river levels and snowpack since 1970, indicating even more imports are likely.
  3. The $16 billion cost of BC Hydro’s Site C dam has not yet been included in BC Hydro customers’ bills – that amount has to be paid.  A new call for renewable energy will add even more costs to BC Hydro bills.
  4. Vancouver has already moved to an effective ban on renewable natural gas and natural gas four years ago and well in advance of the provincial deadline of 2030 – arbitrarily restricting energy sources for new buildings to electricity. Reversing course on the ban will provide choice and allow significantly more affordability and dependability at a time of high costs for residents.
